Living Statues
Billy Cone began his photographic journey in 1982 with a Physics 45 Course of darkroom and fieldwork. A business major at the time, Billy spent more hours working on his photography course than on all four of his upper-level business classes. He won two Kodak Snapshot Awards from the Greensboro Daily News that same year. But at the time no one could predict the future. Billy spent the next seven years marketing gourmet foods from France, all the while conducting a self-study of the photographic arts. Excursions and vacations were opportunities for Billy to thrive on his love for photography, honing his newfound skills.
Color, at this time, was his medium. In 1987, Billy left Washington, D.C. for France to get a better vision on his life. There, he found more peace of mind to see his temporary future which would be working on construction on Figure Eight Island on the coast of North Carolina. Working construction freed his mind, and Cone got very clear on what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. On a gorgeous Fall day, Cone quit his construction job to begin a full-time career in writing and photography. From here the future looked much clearer~marketing his photography in restaurants and galleries, writing, and chasing the light.
Billy’s landscapes, skyscapes, and cityscapes were his forte at this time. He found his favorite subject matter in France and Italy and began recording images of the people he encountered along the way. In 1996, Billy spent two months traveling in France which became the seed for his first book. Sixty Days Under The Influence~A Photo Journal Through France was published by Pentland Press, Inc. in 1997.
More and more Billy shot the people, their activities, and portraits, always in color. He released his next book in 2000 which was another colorful record of life in the Hexagon. Photos de Voyage & A Gourmets` Journal, published by Hexagon Books, was a hit. Cone’s vivid colors and subjects which typified the country life pleased a wide audience. Even children enjoy looking at the pictures of this attractive book.
Sales of Billy’s framed cibachromes of Venice continued to rise at Spectrum Gallery of Wilmington. North Carolina, so in 2002, Billy decided to rent a flat in the 5th Arrondissement of Paris for the year. His stay began in Winter, and his medium had changed to black and white. He had come full circle from his black-and-white roots in Chapel Hill to this, his dream of photographing La Pere Lachaise. During that year, Billy went on to shoot all the major cemeteries of the City of Light and record the pictures in Living Statues.
